Simile
Simile (উপমা) ঃ কোনো বাক্যে যদি Like, as,as…..as, resemble, as if দিয়ে দুটি ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রানীর মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝায় তাই simile.
Ex: He is as dangerous as a tiger.
Note: একই জাতীয় বস্তুর/বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা হলে simile হবে না ।
Ex: Nazrul is like Shelly. (এখানে দু’জনই ব্যক্তি বা একই বিশিষ্টের তাই Like থাকা সত্ত্বেও simile হবে না ।)
কিন্তু Nazrul is like a fire/bird (এখানে Nazrul এবং fire/bird শব্দ দুটি একই বিশিষ্টের নয় এবং like উল্লেখ আছে তাই তুলনাটি simile হবে .)
Metaphor
Metaphor (রূপক): দুটি ব্যক্তি/বস্তু এবং প্রাণীর মধ্যে যখন অসম্ভব তুলনা বুঝাবে তাই Metaphor. Metaphor এ as, like, as…..as, resemble, as if এগুলো থাকে না।
Ex: Youth is wild and age is time.
The man is a mad dog.
Metaphor এর বিশিষ্টেগুলো হচ্ছেঃ
- Comparision between two dissimilar things (তুলনাটি হবে অসাদৃশ্যপূর্ণ দুটি বস্তু/বিষয়ের মধ্যে)।
- As, like as ….. as so … as , resemble, as if etc এ শব্দগুলোর ব্যবহার হবে না ।
Note: একই জাতীয় বস্তুর/বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা হলে Metaphor হবে না ।যেমন- Nazrul is Shelly – এখানে দু’জনই ব্যক্তি বা একই বিশিষ্টের তাই Metaphor হবে না ।
কিন্তু যদি বলি – Life is a dream এখানে – Life এবং Dream শব্দ দুটি একই বিশিষ্টের নয়, তাই তুলনাটি Metaphor হবে।
Ex: The man is a mad dog.
Distinction between Simile and Metaphor
Homophones (সমোচ্চারিত ভিন্নার্থক শব্দ) >> Each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meaning origins, or spelling. >> Air: heir, some: sum, Suite: sweet.
Homonym (সমস্বর) >> Each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meaning origins, or spelling. >> Left (verb): left (noun), wound (injury): wound (warp around)
Irony (বক্রাঘাত)>>. The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or empathic effect. >> A very fine friend you are to forsake me in my trouble.
Limerick (সাধারণ কৌতুকপূর্ণ ছড়া) >> A form of light verse.
Myth (পুরাণ কথা)>> An ancient story about gods and goddesses and their mysterious forces. >> The Greek myth, The Roman Myth.
Mythology (পুরাণ তত্ত্ব) >> Myths are collectively called mythology. >> Ramayan, gamemnon, Mahabharat.
Ode (গাথা কবিতা) >> A poem in which a person expresses a strong feeling of love or respect for someone or something. >> Ode on solitude by Alexander Pope.
Oxymoron (বিরোধালঙ্কার) >> A figure in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith un faithful, falsely true). >> Walking death, weirdly normal, Painfully beautiful.
Onomatopoeia (অনুকার শব্দ) >> The formation of a word from a sound associated with is named. >> Jingle-Jaangle, hiss-hiss.
Paradox (স্ববিরোধী কিন্তু সত্যবর্জিত নয়) >> A seemingly absurd or contradictory or statement or proposition which investigated may prove to be well founded true. >> Failure is the pillar of success.
Fun (শব্দ-কৌতুক) >> A joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sounds alike but have different meaning. >> The Railway society reception was an informal party of people of all stations in life.
Personification (ব্যক্তিরূপে প্রকাশ)>> The representation of an abstract quality in human form. >> Lighting danced across the sky, Opportunity was knocking at her door.
Prosody (ছন্দবিজ্ঞান) >> The study or science of versification. >> “Aeneid” by Virgil, “To my dear and loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet.
Protagonist (প্রধান চরিত্র) >> The leading character of actor in a play. >> In “The Hunger Games”, Katniss is the Protagonist.
Soliloquy (স্বগতোক্তি)>> A dramatic technique of speaking alone on the stage. >> “To be or not to be? That is the question” by Hamlet.
Sonnet (চতুর্দশপদী কবিতা) >> The ordinary sonnet consists of fourteen lines. >> “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” by William Shakespeare.
Tragedy (বিয়োগান্তক নাটক) >> The imitation of an action that is serious and also, as having magnitude, complete in itself. >> “Macbeth” by Shakespeare, A Doll’s House by Henrick Ibsen.
Wit (রসময় ও চাতুর্যপূর্ণ) >> Wit is a form of intelligent humour, the ability to say or write things that are clever and usually funny.
