Simile
Simile (উপমা) ঃ কোনো বাক্যে যদি Like, as,as…..as, resemble, as if দিয়ে দুটি ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা প্রানীর মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝায় তাই simile.
Ex: He is as dangerous as a tiger.
Note: একই জাতীয় বস্তুর/বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা হলে simile হবে না ।
Ex: Nazrul is like Shelly. (এখানে দু’জনই ব্যক্তি বা একই বিশিষ্টের তাই Like থাকা সত্ত্বেও simile হবে না ।)
কিন্তু Nazrul is like a fire/bird (এখানে Nazrul এবং fire/bird শব্দ দুটি একই বিশিষ্টের নয় এবং like উল্লেখ আছে তাই তুলনাটি simile হবে .)
Metaphor
Metaphor (রূপক): দুটি ব্যক্তি/বস্তু এবং প্রাণীর মধ্যে যখন অসম্ভব তুলনা বুঝাবে তাই Metaphor. Metaphor এ as, like, as…..as, resemble, as if এগুলো থাকে না।
Ex: Youth is wild and age is time.
The man is a mad dog.
Metaphor এর বিশিষ্টেগুলো হচ্ছেঃ

- Comparision between two dissimilar things (তুলনাটি হবে অসাদৃশ্যপূর্ণ দুটি বস্তু/বিষয়ের মধ্যে)।
- As, like as ….. as so … as , resemble, as if etc এ শব্দগুলোর ব্যবহার হবে না ।
Note: একই জাতীয় বস্তুর/বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা হলে Metaphor হবে না ।যেমন- Nazrul is Shelly – এখানে দু’জনই ব্যক্তি বা একই বিশিষ্টের তাই Metaphor হবে না ।
কিন্তু যদি বলি – Life is a dream এখানে – Life এবং Dream শব্দ দুটি একই বিশিষ্টের নয়, তাই তুলনাটি Metaphor হবে।
Ex: The man is a mad dog.
Distinction between Simile and Metaphor
Simile
দূটি প্রাণী/ বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা বোঝালে সিমিলে হয়।
An explicit comparison between two different things.
Like, as, as … as, resemble, as if ইত্যাদি ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Your eyes are like sunshine.
You are as happy as a clown.
The world is like a stage.
Metaphor
অভেদ কল্পনা করে বিশেষভাব প্রকাশের জন্য রূপক অর্থে যে শব্দ প্রয়োগ করা হয়।
An implicit comparison between two different things.
Like, as, as … as, resemble, as if ইত্যাদি ব্যবহৃত হয় না ।
Your are my sunshine.
You are a clown.
The world is a stage.

Blank verse (অমিত্রাক্ষর) >> Poerty consisting of iambic pentameter lines without rhyme at the end. >> The moon takes its bath in lovely silver dust.
Canto (সর্গ) >> A subdivision of an epic or narrative poem.
Catastrophy (ধবংস/বিপর্যয়) >> The tragic end of dramatic events.
Chorus (বৃন্দগীতি) >> Chorus is a group of performers in a play who comment the action.
Couplet (শ্লোক) >> Two lines of verse rhyming together. >> “Singing he was , or fluting all the day He was as fresh as is the month of May”
Drama (নাটক) >> A piece of writing that tells a story and is performed on a stage. (comedy, Tragedy, Farce, Melodrama). >> “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles.
Dramatic Monologue (নাটকীয় স্বগতোক্তি) >> A 1 A literary work in which a single speaker expresses his thoughts and feelings to a silent listener. >> “My last Duchess” by Robert Browning.
Elegy (শোকগাথা) >> An Elegy is a poem of lamentation, composed of; death, war, love and similar themes. >> “In memory of W.B. Yeats” by W.H Auden.
Epic (মহাকাব্য) >> An Epic is a long narrative poem, on a grand scale, about the deeds of warriors and heroes. >> “the Iliad” by Homer.
Fable(উপকথা) >> A short story that usually is about animals and that is intended to teach a lesson.
Hyperbole (অতিরঞ্জন) >> Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. >> I have a million things to do today.
Hymn (প্রশংসা সঙ্গীত) >> A lyric poem or song in praise of a god or hero.
