National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB)(Bengali: ন্যাশনাল ইনস্টিটিউট অব বায়োটেকনোলজি) is a governmental institute in Bangladesh under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
It was established in 1999 by the government as part of an ADP(Annual Development Project) project to intensify the biotechnological research in the country.
Dr. Naiyyum Choudhury was the founding project director of the Institute The main objective of the institute is to coordinate the biotechnological researches carried out throughout the country as well as conducting its own research programs in different areas of biotechnology.
The institute is also responsible to create skilled manpower for biotechnology and genetic engineering.
To establishing a National Institute regarding Biotechnology in Bangladesh a Project Proposal (PP) was submitted to the Government in 1984.
Thereafter, the Government subjected the matter to different examinations and evaluation for several years. Subsequently in August 1993 in a meeting of the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) it was decided that an Institute of Biotechnology would be established in Bangladesh and accordingly a Project Proposal was submitted to the Planning Commission.
The Planning Commission advised for a feasibility study and the report was submitted to the Government in April 1994 with a strong recommendation for the establishment of a ‘National Institute of Biotechnology’.
Based on the report Ministry of Science and Technology in May 1995 submitted a Project Concept Proposal (PCP) a cost of Tk. 1864.24 lakh to Pre-ECNEC meeting and it was accepted.
In a meeting of ECNEC held on 12 May 1999 the PCP was approved and accordingly a Project Proposal (PP) was prepared with an estimated cost of TK. 2021.20 lakh. However, after a visit of ICGEB at New Delhi, India some aspects of the institute were reexamined and expanded.
To create an institutional space for research, technology transfer and human resource development for developing ecofriendly biotech products that will ensure welfare of the people.
The institute is committed to create a strong infrastructure both for research and commercialization ensuring a steady flow of bioproducts, bioprocesses and new biotechnologies.
The institute will serve the country as the coordinating center of biotechnology research and promote awareness on biotechnological innovations and technologies.
Finally, the institute will engage, excite and trained up young people about biotechnology and its immense potential to heal the sick, feed the hungry, restore the environment, and fuel the economy.
Foundation stone of NIB was laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 14 May, 2000.
